| Dark Funeral Teach Children to Worship Satan Apart from Dissection, Dark Funeral has always been my second favourite band from Sweden; having that said, it could be tough to remain on the fence to anything new these gentlemen can come up with (even when writing a review for one of their efforts). Yet, it'd be worthless to be defended against the quality this mini-album offers, for reasons I'll be specifying next. Despite the rather clichéd and amusing title, Teach Children To
Worship Satan features one new song from the group's next album Diabolis Interium (entitled An Apprentice of Satan), 4 cover
tracks and a live video-clip of the cited song as an extra. The new
symphony is conceivably one of the finest musical assaults the band has
ever written, seeing as it renders a razor-sharp, wicked guitar work,
tied to a breathless and caustic drum command (enough to scatter the
apprehension you may have regarding their ensuing opus). King Diamond's The Trial is a reasonable interpretation of the classic in its
entirety (apart from a couple of vocal parts that should've been better
worked on - but on the other hand, replicating his range isn't a
painless job). Slayer's Dead Skin Mask is conceivably the weakest
one here, as it doesn’t offer any unordinary imprint from the band, even
if the listener gets pretty rewarded with Remember the Fallen (one of Sodom's best songs from Agent Orange) and ultimately with Pagan Fears, a Mayhem classic taken from its seminal De
Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas album. In the words of Glen Benton, shorter albums are way better than full-lengths, as they don't fall short to detain one's interest after half of their playing and - even if this isn't one per se - Dark Funeral has undeniably hit a nerve on Dracula's fang. Brace yourself for The Arrival of Satan's Empire. www.darkfuneral.se © 2000 The Lodge |
